Waves in the Dark
I contributed 'Waves in the Dark' for Noise Complaint, the second issue of Run Ins magazine edited by Naja Surattee. Read it on desktop (not mobile).
Visibility is a trap. Capitalism dominates the visual realm. To be seen is to be subjected to the flattening tragedy of categorization. We doomscroll through pictures and grow bored with spectacle. Audibility, however, is an outlet: a clear transmission whose source can remain concealed. Birds call to each other from tree branches, hidden among leaves to greet each other and warn of a predator’s approach. In the evenings, the pond near my house thrums with a chorus of crickets and mostly-submerged amphibians looking for lovers. Bats zip overhead in the twilight sky like dark meteors, echolocating with sonar that bounces off us even though we can’t hear it.
